Effective Coaching

By Linda D. Smith, MS, LPC, CEAP

Coaching provides the opportunity for supervisor and employee, mentor and  mentee to work together to deal with areas of interest and concern, set and achieve goals and improve performance.  Developing the skills necessary to provide good coaching can increase motivation, enhance relationships and help resolve difficult issues.

In this class the participants will have the opportunity to learn coaching skills while experiencing a coaching relationship, thereby creating learning on 2 levels – that learned through experience and through cognition.   Participants will learn about and rehearse the 5 stages of the coaching process, namely:

 1.      Setting the Stage and Using Foundation       Skills
2.
Assessment and Information-gathering
3.
Feedback and Developmental Planning
4.
Action/Implementation
5.
Follow-up

This class provides an overview of the entire coaching process and offers learning in each of the stages.  Greater skill mastery can be achieved through additional practice and/or training.

Upon completion of the class, participants will be able to:

·        Identify 5 aspects of being an effective coach

·        Identify one personal strength and one weakness in each area

·        Develop their own action plan for developing the coaching areas needing strengthening
